I have always been a “tree hugger”. For as long as I can remember I have thought of trees as friends, guardians and a life force that must be embraced. I first came across the concept of “forest bathing” when I lived in Japan during the 1980’s - there is nothing more amazing than being in a redwood forest with trees arching overhead cutting out the sky and the sound, with shafts of golden sunlight streaking their way between the branches to the ground below. The trees I paint are the ones that “speak” to me on my daily round, some of them may not be very big but they have a presence and I try to bring that out in their portraits.
