Karren Burkett

Karren Burkett is a Shaftesbury-based artist whose practice is grounded in observation, material sensitivity, and quiet attention to the natural world. Working primarily in mixed media, she creates thoughtful, layered pieces that reflect the interplay between inner landscapes and the changing rhythms of the outer world. Her artwork is held in private collections across Great Britain, Europe, and the United States.

Karren’s journey

Karren’s artistic journey began in the wild moors above Haworth, Yorkshire, where she spent her formative years immersed in the landscape. She studied at art colleges in Leeds and Cardiff before moving into careers in publishing and finance in London. A later move to Tokyo opened up ten years of deep engagement with Japanese art and culture — an experience that left a lasting imprint on her visual language. Since returning to England, she has settled in Dorset, where the light, seasons, and natural surroundings now play a central role in her work.

Her paintings emerge slowly through a process of layering — of paint, thought, and time — revealing quiet textures, traces, and form. Karren doesn’t aim to recreate what is seen, but rather to respond to it. Her work invites the viewer to slow down, observe more closely, and find a sense of space within stillness.

For Karren, painting is not a performance but a practice — a personal, intuitive way of listening to place, memory, and change. The varied landscapes she’s lived in, from Yorkshire to Tokyo to Dorset, continue to echo through her work, shaping both subject and tone with a quiet, confident voice.
